Author Showcase: Thumbuddy Book Series

By Mark Arens Published: July 30, 2009 Author Showcase: A place for authors and illustrators to gain visibility for their works.* Every word in the Thumbuddy book series is a delicious raindrop meant to grow your child’s self worth! Written to strengthen the parent-child bond, author, Mark Arens, asks readers to replace Thumbuddy’s name with their child’s name while reading. The books are then transformed as is your child’s self image as they are told they are lovable, special, huggable, etc. The endearing thumbprint character, Thumbuddy, conveys the message that just like your

Video: "The Patience Bossa" – Perry Farrell & Deborah Harry

One of the cooler tracks from the Tor Hyams-compiled (and recently re-released) A World of Happiness is the Perry Farrell-Deborah Harry duet “The Patience Bossa.” As with other kids’ songs, the potentially annoying fact that it’s a fairly overt message song (“patience = good,” natch) is very much ameliorated by the fact that it’s a pretty cool song. Farrell and Harry each do a good job with their roles in the song (Farrell, unsurprisingly, is anti-patience ’til the end) and the

Teenagers and Reading

By Reading is Fundamental Published: July 28, 2009 Perhaps the teenager in your family was once an avid reader, but now hardly ever opens a book, or perhaps your child never liked reading in the first place. In this article, RIF suggests how parents can help their teenagers decide for themselves that reading is important to their lives. With that in mind, half of this article speaks directly to young people. We

Concert Review: The Wiggles (Phoenix, July 2009)

I promise, this’ll be the last Wiggles post for awhile, but since I went to the show and wrote a review of it for the Phoenix New Times, I thought I’d at least note it — you can read the review — with 10% extra snark — here.

I’ll try to update this post with a few slightly grainy photos later, but for now, here’s some cheap front-row cellphone footage from a

Change is good (Gone With The Wand: Margie Palatini)

By Luisa LaFleur, The Children’s Book Review Published: July 28, 2009 Everybody has days when we wish we could be someone else, or do something else. Kids, too. I know my three-year-old is always trying on new hats (figuratively and literally!). I recently came across a book that helps our little ones see it’s okay if they aren’t too good at one thing because that gives them the opportunity to try something else. Gone With The Wand by Margie Palatini (Author), Brian Ajhar (Illustrator) Reading level: Ages 4-8 Hardcover: 40 pages Publisher: Orchard Books (April 15, 2009) In
